    About

Who we are & what we do

    Roger Lightle

    Highwaymen Art Specialist

I learned of the Highwaymen in the late 1990’s but noticed them much earlier. In the 1970’s I would frequently see the artists on the side of the road with their artwork for sale. Usually at the base of North Bridge in Ft. Pierce. The group’s initial artist, Harold Newton was from Gifford and lived near RA McLendon who in time became the groups second Highwaymen. I never formally met Harold Newton but while waiting in line at a bank in downtown Ft. Pierce Mr. Newton walked in with a painting, a commissioned piece for a bank employee. That was 1977.

In 1994, curator Jim Fitch coined the name The Highwaymen. This group has achieved many positive benchmarks since 1994. Several milestones which include their 2004 induction into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, several important Highwaymen museum exhibitions and NPR’s national broadcast on over 1100 radio station across our country. In 2015 myself and Highwaymen book author Gary Monroe made the submission to the Smithsonian for their induction into the permanent collection.

Today we are very involved in all things Highwaymen art related. From specialty events to curating Highwaymen museum exhibitions.
